tks Tink
for yrs,I overlooked the importance of Bill`s story because I am a low class, poor country guy and he was a Wall Street City guy. I never did a lot of stuff he did,but when I looked at how he felt, thinked, and drank, and left out all the rest,I know we are two peas of the same pod.I am just like him except his illness was progressed a little more than mine. |

Exactly Tommy... it was the feelings. It was hard for me to really identify with the Big Book for some time. My sponsor told me to read the
stories..and they were very instrumental especially in the early part of sobriety.
What I find interesting about Bill W and Dr. Bob was their outward appearance. Today we see a drunk and I just never have been able to relate it to Bill W. he seemed to me to have the home, the wife, the money marbles and chalk...same with Dr. Bob. However, back then most households looked a lot different than they do today. I never had that kind of life loosing my parents I did not see much either. So at first I just did not relate to Bill W. But the concept seemed to be working through the stories and others I met in the program. His history is interesting, and I am glad brought us such a wonderful program... |

I got a lot out of the book, My Name is Bill W. AA comes of Age is a good history, too. There is a lot written about Bill and worth reading.
People come up with the wildest ideas of who this man was. Having a biographical perspective and knowlege of AA history helps defray the more coo coo concepts. |

Ted,
I have those books as well and they are awesome in my opinion. I get alot out of them every time I read them. Deb

I believe that it's important to note that by the time Bill got sober he and Lois were living with her parents. If it weren't for them Bill would have
been living on the street. Life on the Bowery was right around the corner for Bill.

I have a picture of lois sitting in the drivers seat of their motorcycle, the caption says that Lois did most of the driving. I just wonder what Bill was doing
in the side cart? LOL.
What struck me the most in Bills story was when he needed to drink, he knew he had to go find another alcoholic to help sober up. It says it again in Working With Others. Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It works when other activities fail. This is our twelfth suggestion: Carry this message to other alcoholics! You can help when no one else can. You can secure their confidence when others fail. Remember they are very ill.

I sure identified with the way he felt, and with the struggles he had with his drinking. I didn't have the same kind of life, maybe...but could kind of
hear his heart.

I liked reading Bill's story. It reminded me that alcoholism is no respecter of age, sex, social status, or anything else. I had this image of the
"skid row bum" as an alcoholic! That goes to show you how little I knew about it! LOL!

The first time I read Bill's Story I was about 3 days sober and I felt sorry for him. The second time I read it, a little over 2 years later, I felt sorry
for myself. Probably when I made that final decision to surrender to win.
